The State University of Tocantins (Unitins) affirms its commitment to sustainable development by integrating the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the UN 2030 Agenda into teaching, research, extension and management policies. In 2021, Unitins became a signatory member of the SDG Strategy Network. In 2022, Unitins participated and was approved in the selection process to join the steering committee of the SDG Strategy Network Brazil, together with several other institutions recognised for their commitment to Agenda 2030.
Unitins signs a cooperation agreement among state universities in the Amazon region, aimed at sustainable technological and scientific development in the region.
The university was awarded the SDG Award for Education in 2023 and 2024 and is competing with several projects for the 2025 edition. This achievement highlights the university's dedication to integrating the SDGs into teaching, research and extension, encouraging the active participation of students, teachers and staff in transformative actions that positively impact society and strengthen the formation of conscious and engaged citizens.
Unitins was accredited as a climate observer by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in November 2023, becoming the first state university in Brazil and the only one in the North Region to achieve this recognition. As a result, the institution now joins a select group of universities recognised by the UN for their work on environmental and climate issues.
Unitins achieved important recognition by joining the National Commission for Sustainable Development Goals (CNODS), an advisory body linked to the General Secretariat of the Presidency of Brazil. Nominated by the SDG Strategy Network, the university was selected in a highly competitive process, which included the participation of more than 150 institutions from across the country, and was chosen to represent the academic sector and the Amazon region. This nomination reinforces Unitins's leading role in debates on sustainable, democratic and inclusive development, in addition to highlighting its strategic role in the implementation and monitoring of the 2030 Agenda in Brazil, actively contributing to the advancement of policies and actions aimed at fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Unitins joined the technical team responsible for the report, which brings together the country's efforts to comply with the UN's 2030 Agenda. Since 2023, the university has been part of the National Commission for the SDGs (CNODS) and the SDG Strategy Network Steering Committee, consolidating its role in national cooperation networks focused on sustainable development. This participation reinforces Unitins's institutional commitment to building and monitoring public policies aligned with global sustainability challenges.
