Institucional Profile

The State University of Tocantins (UNITINS) has adopted new conceptual approaches to knowledge management and dissemination, management sciences, cognitive sciences, and communication sciences for teaching, research, and extension, and it has expanded its activities in the fields of environmental and agricultural sciences to attend social groups.

UNITINS affirms its pluralistic tradition by embracing different philosophies, stimulating dialogue and interdisciplinarity among its peers and communities. This is supported by its cultural, scientific, and educational background and it is expressed in teaching, research, and university extension, integrated with technical-professional training, dissemination of culture, and philosophical, scientific, artistic, and technological creation, following the items of art. 3, in Chapter I, of the UNITINS Statute:

  1. The promotion of the harmonic and integrated development of the community of the state of Tocantins.
  2. The generation, promotion, preservation, and propagation of culture, stimulating people's access to cultural assets and values.
  3. The advancement of technology for the development of the potential of the State and its people.
  4. Technical support for the implementation of enterprises based on the utilization of natural resources.
  5. The training and improvement of university professors and researchers.
  6. The promotion and provision of teaching, research, and extension services aimed at the development of methods and processes of education and training.
  7. The formulation and execution of special education development programs at their various levels, covering regular, postgraduate, supplementary, telepresence, modular distance, or special regime courses, arising from the requirements or demands of state or regional planning.

Objectives and Institutional goals

Unitins is a higher education institution that aims to achieve the objectives proposed in Article 3 of its Statute:

  1. OFFER higher education based on the inseparability principle between teaching, research, and extension;
  2. FORMULATE and execute programs for teaching, research, and extension development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in face-to-face and distance modalities, based on internal and societal demands;
  3. STIMULATE the valorization and dissemination of local, regional, and national culture in its different manifestations;
  4. STIMULATE and support the development of scientific thinking and critical-reflective thinking for the continuity of citizen education;
  5. TO TRAIN graduates in the different fields of knowledge, suitable for insertion in professional sectors and for participation in the development of Brazilian society, and to collaborate in their continuous training;
  6. ENCOURAGE and promote the various artistic, cultural, scientific, and technological knowledge and know-how through teaching, research, and extension;
  7. GIVE VISIBILITY and promote the dissemination of knowledge produced in teaching, research, and extension, through different means of communication, as a way of returning to society;
  8. ENCOURAGE and foster research and scientific investigation, aiming at the development of science, technology, and innovation for the dissemination of the knowledge produced;
  9. PROMOTE university extension, aiming at transformative actions between the university and society through educational, cultural, and scientific processes;
  10. OFFER specialized services to the entire academic community and society in general through teaching, research, and extension, maintaining a continuous collaborative relationship with them;

Areas of academic action

Unitins's academic performance integrates theory with practice based on teaching, research, and extension. Unitins aims to continue its work with referential, inter, and multidisciplinary themes to characterize its mission by academic performance in the areas of knowledge in Agricultural Sciences, Human Sciences, Exact and Earth Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, Linguistics, Languages and Arts, and Biological Sciences. In this context, the institution is concerned that its graduates have:

  • the ability to carry out activities related to their professions, combined with theoretical-scientific, humanistic, critical, and reflective approaches channeled towards integration with social, cultural, and economic reality of their respective communities;
  • the skills for analyzing and implementing specific actions in their areas of training in the local, regional, national, and global contexts;
  • the competencies to transform knowledge into problem solutions, through the provision of specialized services to communities, integrating learning into the achievable with ethics, commitment, and excellence.

Social responsibility of the Institution

Social responsibility translates into the way the institution conducts its activities in order to become co-responsible for the development of the state of Tocantins. In this way, the institution puts into practice programs and projects centered on sustainable development, social inclusion, with priority on affirmative policies for people.

  • Unitins is based on the main principles of social responsibility: respect for the various actors involved (internal employees, academics, providers, and institutional partners), environmental responsibility, and cooperation to minimize the social impacts brought by human activity.
  • Under the ethical prism, the university always seeks to offer quality education, in step with the innovation of science and technology, centered on policies and practices of access and permanence for all citizens.
